about

At boarding school in my teens 1981-1983, I struggled with homesickness for the bushland, garden, creek, pets and high school mates. Being eccentric, awkward and young for our year level, clumsy at sport and obsessed with Faerielore, meant loneliness. Ironically, this song connected with others who hid their emotions well. It turned a key to friendship. After hearing this recording, a kind girl called Liz Martin hugged me for the first time as we skipped down the hall. Thanks Liz and our mutual friend Ali for being there.

lyrics

Caught in the changing tide of uncertainty
for every tear that falls is a shattered dream
By now your hopes have disappeared
so all that’s left is fear
and insecurity

Like a sparrow lost on the stormy seas
you struggle for your sanity
and though
you know you may not win
you’ve got to try again,
it gets lonely
but it’s really only
a stepping stone
it won’t last for long
you know it cannot last for long

You’ve tried to hide your fear behind a smile
and think that just by lying you’ll survive
but all the while
I’ve seen it in your eyes
the shadows of the night
still haunt your weary heart

And like a sparrow lost on the stormy seas
you struggle for your sanity
and though you know you may not win,
you’ve got to try again,
it gets lonely
but it’s really only
a stepping stone
it won’t last for long
you know it cannot last for long,
it cannot last for long

Lyrics, Melody, Guitar, Vocals, arrangement: Louise John, 1981-83.
I no longer recall who played the piano. It might have been Kate Shea. We made the recording in an old part of the school where I often hid behind a piano, when not curled up in a basement, or sneaking up forbidden stairs to a balcony behind a wall of ivy. The oil painting of the sea is by my mum Belinda, and the sparrow courtesy of Canva.
