South of the Sun and North of the Moon - single

by Louisa John-Krol

/

about

This song is in a forthcoming compilation of ethereal music 'North of the Moon' by three fey Australian songbirds: Reilly McCarron, Adrienne Piggott and me. Our brief bios are below.

Nicholas Albanis, of electro-medieval band Dandelion Wine, recorded this song at Crustacean Creations. His instrumentation is outlined in Credits.

I composed this song for an anthology 'South of the Sun - Australian fairy tales for the 21st century', which includes these lyrics within my own fairy tale. Coming on Serenity Press, a publisher in Western Australia, for YA & adults, rated G, the intercultural anthology challenges stereotypes and celebrates diversity.

Both sun and moon are celebrated in this picture 'Autumn Equinox' by Rachael Hammond (of Fantastical Fae Art), an Australian artist specialising in wildlife and fantasy.

Reilly McCarron: musician, folklorist and playwright, who co-founded the Australian Fairy Tale Society. Reilly’s 2012 one-woman multimedia play Sleeping Kingdom, Waking Beauty toured interstate, including at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne and Sydney’s Fringe Festival. Reviewers praised the production for its artistic complexity, humour, and insight. She can be found at Meadowlark Soundscapes. Reilly recently composed the soundtrack for a series of fairy tale audio books at Serenity Press, read by the author Kate Forsyth.

Adrienne Piggott: founder and lead singer-songwriter of Australia's leading mythic-rock band, Spiral Dance. Adrienne also performs in Saltwater Taffy, Ruby Moon and Hot For Joe (a Morris Dancing side she's led) and hosts award-winning events such as The English Ale festival. Her latest albums in a celebrated discography are Through A Sylvan Doorway & Land And Legend.

Louisa John-Krol: faerie singer-storyteller, published writer, editor, former teacher and recording artist, with a discography of six solo albums mostly on the fairy-world label Prikosnovénie in France; non-profit roles include serving as president of the Australian Fairy Tale Society.

Three minstrels, three fates, three States: New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria.

lyrics

Lyrics

Verse One:

South of the Sun and North of the Moon
come sit beside me and weave at my loom
Glinder,* my dear, oh spin with me soon
for the Good Folk are near by the bale and the boon

Verse Two:

West of the Wind and East of the Sea
let the giddy grace flow to the root of the tree
Some from afar and some from a dream
many-coloured our hands, if we be who we glean

Chorus:

Hey ho derry o! O’er sand or snow
Bay, bushberry and pomegranate grow

Verse Three:

If we begin but a tale or a tune
We can marry the Willow and Wattle forenoon
South of the Sun and North of the Moon
We can unleash our love like a gale on a schoon*

*Glinder: a verb I invented for Rebecca-Anne: a hybrid of glimmer, linger and mingle. Active musing. Fey hobnobbing. May involve ambling, meandering, roaming, flickering or weaving through a gathering. Its speed varies from lolling to darting in curiosity, whimsy and a dash of mischief.

*Schoon: abbreviation of schooner, a small fishing boat
