Oh you’ve been so sad, for you dream We are all moving on some dark old sea But you won’t be lonely, I promise thee! If you believe in the fairy tale And if you’re hurt, and if you’re cold You have need of a fairy tale At your birth, until you’re old You have need of a fairy tale Over mountain, under stone You have need of a fairy tale Under sunshine, over moon You have need of a fairy tale After the Garden, Adam and Eve Sang of a serpent in a dark old tree But where we have come from and who we shall be Lies in the riddle of a changing sea And if you’re hurt, and if you’re cold You have need of a fairy tale ...

One here! One there! One here! One there! Ooooooh, prepare the fairy ring! Ooooooh, prepare the fire dancing! Be they wayward, be they straight, Those fairy lanterns, they have no weight One here! One there! One here! One there! Ooooooh, prepare the fairy ring! Ooooooh, prepare the fire dancing!

Here in your feathers, so warm on wings I could sleep forever, while they sing It’s a long way, to my fairy ring It’s the journey, it’s the flight of the owl! When the owl flies, when the owl flies He owns the night When the owl flies through the dark night All night, he flies in me. Take me with you, over the stream To the mountain where the moon gleams Wild eyes seeing everything, Beaks, talons, silver wings When the owl flies ...

Something in the storm tells him she would come tonight When she does he won’t let her out of his sight! He’ll not be a poor fisherman, she’ll make him a king, so promised the merrow of the sea. She had sea-wild eyes in the palest face Half hidden by golden hair. She was green iridescence, Shimmering water-form, waves whispering everywhere. Luty! Down in the deep we’re calling, Luty, won’t you come back with me? Luty, you are the one I came for Luty, come into the sea. All across the ocean she would dance away his fear Now he’ll never dare to let her out of his dreams Her eyes are the ocean laughing through her hair: Luty! Come into the sea … Luty …

When I was your gypsy, and you were my sailorking We two travelled and called ourselves free But we have been captive of these ten centuries, We are prisoners of old sea love. If we travelled together, or travelled alone In love was the only place we could not leave And we laughed at the villagers when we ran free That your love for the sea was your knowledge of me. Give me seven seas for a sailor’s song! All for the sea lord I knew: Seven times seven lives I would long For a pagan storm by a full moon I’ll be away on a journey far Whether he’ll follow or no I’ll feel his laughter in every star And his eyes in the waves so close And I’ll be your gypsy, and you’ll be my sailorking And we’ll travel an’ call ourselves free But we have been captive of these ten centuries We are prisoners of old sea love.

Saltchild Lullaby: And when you were resting, I gave you my love song Saltchild born in the heart of the deep And you and I knew when we called it our lullaby that our two spirits would never sleep The Seagiant: Sleep, oh darling our Storm has passed, dream of it all your life Though your dreams might only come briefly true, they last long after you die Sleep, my Ocean my River my Rain, safe in the Earth that loves you rest my Hunger, down on the seafloor till I return to wake you I will return Oh, look you’re so peaceful just like some man who dreams on the seafloor Oh! my Seagiant was beautiful, you won’t forget me. Sleep oh darling … I’ll dream of it all my life! Though our dreams might only come briefly true, they last long after we die Sleep, my Ocean, my River, my Rain, safe in the Earth that loves you And I’ll rest my hunger, down on the seafloor till I return to wake you I will return to wake you! Watch me return

about

A free gift, for sorrowing sweet hearts during the pandemic:

Revisiting this 1990 cassette by my old duo Fionvarra is like opening a long-hidden music box. A new century transferred the analogue tape to digital files and now, 3 decades later, the internet.

With co-composer Andrew Persi's superb musicianship, recorded low-fi, our ambient folk sound ranged from whimsical to spectral.

Fionvarra's music played at Wonderwings, the world's first fairy shop, which employed me as a performer. 'The Faerietale Woman' tells of how a girl becomes a storyteller. In parallel, Wonderwings was my foray into oral fairy storytelling under mentorship of Nell Bell. I pay my respects to her as well as Anne Atkins and all the other fairies, one of whom opened her very own fairy shop Myths & Legends that continues to this day. Yay fairy Dee! And of course, endless respect for Andrew Persi, one of the most talented musicians I ever met - Louisa x

Songs here come with my stories as printed on cassette jackets. The original cover art is my own illustration.
