I wrote this song at Ormond College, University of Melbourne, mid 80s, after breaking up with my first love. Hopefully it will help others to recover from heartbreak, whether that means missing someone, or replenishing a shaken self. Old cassette versions were too fast or warped, so I recorded it anew this year, 2024, in its pristine form, no added instrumentation at all. (I had recorded it in Greece 2003, but the studio burned down so that tape was lost. Oh, life!) So this new recording is of my voice now, forty years after I first wrote the song.
lyrics
Verse 1:
Are you cold? Well you know, you have music to warm you:
don’t be afraid, you have all your songs to cling to
and if you’re lonely, you must call this freedom
where you have only yourself to rely on.
And there is nothing beyond your power,
he couldn’t take your Songflower!
Oh no, so you better keep that flower growing.
Verse 2:
In your life, there is so much good to believe in!
In your mind, there is a heaven undisturbed
and from your crystal pool, all the watersprites are rising,
they have strength to give you.
And there is nothing beyond your power,
he couldn’t take your Songflower!
And there is nothing you can’t do now
Chorus 1:
Why can’t I rest? I’m not in love anymore
and I’m sailing in some limbo …
Rest heart, you’re free as a bird
and the wings are healing swiftly,
I’m not in love anymore
and the waves are rolling home now.
Hey that old witch is dying
and the elves are taking over!
And they’re gonna lead you away to cooler waters
where the Songflower grows
Oh I’m flying away to cooler waters
where the Songflower grows
Verse 3
So you strived, out in the frosty ridges of morning
You were shaken, trampled in the hardest clay
Suddenly the rain was whispering -
Chorus 2, incantation:
She is no-one else’s song
She is no-one else’s song
She is no-one else’s song
She is no-one el - says - she is no-one else’s song,
She is no-one else’s song!
Ah, you’re gonna keep your Songflower so strong,
They’re gonna lead you away to cooler waters
where the Songflower grows
Oh I'm flying away to cooler waters
where the Songflower grows
Oooh please take me away to cooler waters
where the Songflower grows
Hey I’m flying away to cooler waters,
where the Songflower grows
where the Songflower grows.

Haunting, ethereal, melancholy, with exquisite vocals and illustration by a multi-instrumentalist Spanish composer, who presents fabulous videos and is also a sweet, gentle faery. World, love her. Louisa John-Krol
This album carries one of my favourite recordings by this legendary mythic rock band: Adrienne's song 'The Children of Lir'. It's so good that it feels like a traditional ballad. Louisa John-Krol
