Song for Patrick - live at school 1983

from Lula - songs from girlhood by Louisa John-Krol

/

about

Music helped overcome a lonely start to boarding school. At that time, a trusty guitar called Patrick was my closest friend away from Bendigo, where I've since returned, reuniting with childhood friends.

lyrics

It’s easy to pretend
that a guitar can be a kind of friend
so I call you by your name
every time we start to play

Any way you choose
I owe you a song or two
so step into the tune
and I’ll sing this one for you

I take to the strings and I play them softly
when I’ve got something to say
You always answer them
in your own way

No-one knows just why
but there’s a strange bond between you and I
Our language is your sound
and the music that we’ve found
(La-la, La-la-la la, la la, la la la!)

I know you’ll be there
‘cos we both live for the times we share
Together

Patrick and I will be friends forever
it’s something no-one can change
'cos he'll wait there silently
till I call on him again

Then it’s more than just pretence
that a guitar can be a kind of friend
I know you think so too
now that I’ve sung this song for you
For you
