Kunmanngur is a rainbow serpent from an Aboriginal tale, 'The Flood and the Bird Men', told by Kianoo Tjeemairee of the Murinbata tribe*, in a book entitled 'Australian Dreaming - 40,000 years of Aboriginal History', compiled by Jennifer Isaacs, Ure Smith Press. There are many names for the serpent in Indigenous culture, such as Borlung (by the Miali), Kajura (by the Ingarda) or Wagyl (by the Noongar). It may be considered a symbol of fertility and creation. Various native birds are named in the song, such as the curlew.
*Nowadays the word 'group' is considered more respectful than 'tribe'; I've just kept the book's wording as approved by the Aboriginal Arts Board; first edition 1980, reprinted 1984 and 1992. It is also worth noting that since then, the figure 40,000 has been revised upward to at least 65,000 years. Further, the title 'Australian Dreaming' would likely be disputed now as the Dreaming existed before invaders stole the land, renaming it 'Australia'.
From our 5th solo CD Apple Pentacle, released in 2005 on French label Prikosnovénie, this recording began with experimental music by Frederic Chaplain (Lys), co-owner of the label, in Clisson, France, to which we added my songwriting and Brett's further effects in South Australia.
lyrics
down in deep of dawn, where bough was horn
a word was born
roam in rune of rain, your reel is flame
we call your name -
Curlew and Eagle
Pulloo-Pulloo, Karan
Kar Kork and Weirk
Tarduk… Darimun
Kunmanngur! Kunmanngur!

Haunting, ethereal, melancholy, with exquisite vocals and illustration by a multi-instrumentalist Spanish composer, who presents fabulous videos and is also a sweet, gentle faery. World, love her. Louisa John-Krol
This album carries one of my favourite recordings by this legendary mythic rock band: Adrienne's song 'The Children of Lir'. It's so good that it feels like a traditional ballad. Louisa John-Krol
