about

Finding this cassette, I wondered if it had faded to dust. Before the internet you could pack your pain into a shoebox and bury it. In the mid 1980s, Melbourne folk venues toppled like dominoes, stores went by rosters and charts; radio, TV, print media all took cues from each other: an ever tightening monopoly. Record execs rejected my songs until the internet opened doors. I was 30 when I signed my first record deal. Like this tape, I nearly didn’t survive that era. Or the heartbreaks. I narrowly survived an overdose. Only a fraction of my early compositions reached CD. ‘Human Lovers’ was not among them. There are only so many songs you can keep singing about first love. Or for that matter, second or third loves. Especially in the presence of a beloved, loving husband! Make no mistake: I’m not rekindling any old flames. Just conceding that some songs deserve more than a shoebox. Ashes of a fire long gone may brush the brow kindly. Thankfully, hubby of 30 years is still with me. I hope that my sorrows and struggles bring comfort for any of you who have suffered loss. To be alone, all-one, is to be at one with humanity. That, too, is to love.

lyrics

Verse 1

Time apart has made us strangers
See how I’m avoiding you again?
I try to beat you at this elusive game we’re lost in …
Why do I feel I’ve lost a friend?

Chorus

I’m so tired of running,
of being some will o’ the wisp in your dream
I just want to see you -
is it so wrong to be with each other like human lovers do?
I just want to touch you
and be loved right through.

Verse 2

If I whisper, ‘Baby I’m with you!’
Don’t go thinking you’ve conquered me!
I see that frightened prisoner
in your best charms and your little schemes
and I believe I’ll set him free

Chorus

I’m so tired of running,
of being some will o’ the wisp in your dream
I just want to see you -
is it so wrong to be with each other like human lovers do?
I just want to touch you
and be loved right through.

Refrain

I’m tired of running,
of being some will o’ the wisp in your dream
I just want to see you -
is it so wrong to be with each other like human lovers do?
I just want to see you
and be loved right though,
I just want to touch you and be loved!
I just want to hold you
and be loved right through.
