Philip David Morgan Louisa John-Krol is probably one of Australia's most prolific musicians (not to mention a true storyteller in the traditional sense of the world), and yet she deserves to be better-known. This sampler — featuring some of her best work from the Prikosnovénie era (and before then) along with tracks previously unavailable anywhere until now — is a welcome way to get acquainted. I would also recommend it to any live-streaming musicians seeking to build their folk / faerie repertoire. Favorite track: Violin Velvet.

Antiquity 05:53
'Antiquity' I walked down to the lake in Malnerholm; Saw a man with weary eyes an’ a heavy load; he said, “I am troubled because I have answers that don’t satisfy me” I told him: If you want to know… Go, ask the stars that no-one has seen, Where they shine between those galaxies far from home! Go question the sunless night - through an eagle’s eye – While the songs and seas... are calling to Antiquity. So we talked and turned each others’ thoughts around; Well he told me, “Life is a shadow of the mind...” Search inside and lay your questions down: How many people are to be born? How long the tide will rise an’ fall, Maybe time means nothing at all? Ask the moon when she’ll refuse to shine, borrow the prophet’s eyes But the songs and seas are calling to Antiquity. There’s a kind of reason that we’ve both denied; don’t ask me why Just go, ask the stars… We’re calling… Calling to Antiquity… And the songs an’ the seas, they’re calling back Calling right back now, calling... to Antiquity.

'The Valley of Seven Keys' I dreamed of a Statue I dreamed of a Garden that hadn't a key I dreamed of a Play - in a tree I heard Someone say I heard Something whisper from beyond the grave I heard of a Name - in a cave ‘You’d better take this key’, said the man in the Valley of Seven Keys
3.
Sentinel 03:41
'Sentinel' Shouldn’t we go home? couldn’t we just sleep under stars? is that a Will o’ the Wisp through the trees? seems like we’re often led to believe … oh! those dreams, wild animals hunting in reed Shouldn’t we go home? couldn’t we just live like the birds? is that a Will o’ the Wisp through the trees? seems like we’re often led to believe … oh! those dreams, wild oceans are moving in mead
4.
Poppet Plum 03:01
'Poppet Plum' He is on the stair, he knows you: Take your seats inside the tune. The marionettes are there, listening through you, Human dreams hang in this room. Believe their faces, they know you, Their souls are waiting by their feet To hold your graces, and your failures, Not so far above the street. Poppet Plum, stamp and run Bobbing thumb, swing your drum Hand to hand, son to son Till the Human Tale is done. Old as this town, old as this man, With a bagpipe and a bell Tin-tap, lights go down: Time for dancing hands! They can show what we can’t tell.
5.
'House of Legend' (The Golden Cottage) No more man, than a talkative nymph - Was it planned, you would break the silence? In your hands is no trace of my kiss.... Then the love that we bore Was a mere wave in the storm morning.... But in my Golden Cottage - My Cottage of Gold I can be my own Sea-Enchantress! By the rocks - By the stony shore: House of Legend - You stand tall. In the Square, in the Village Market - Trade your wares for the latest gossip Now the Mayor seems to think he likes it - Still the love that we bore Was a mere wave in the Storm Morning…
6.
Fai 02:58
'Fai' How now, o’ spirit! Whither wander you? Over thine hills, over yonder dale On through the bushes, on, on through the briar; Over park, over pale, through flood, through fire I do wander… everywhere, Swifter than the Moon! (yes, even the Orb’s sphere!) Here… Hear Bring your fey favours, loll in sweet sloth; Sleek Midnight savours, vapours of the broth Oberon blinks bees, passing fell an’ wrath – Hang a pearl in every ear! There’s a changeling in the Moon! And your Dream Cat taps the Loom And she’s here, Black Djinn spins near And she’s far, dancing with stars…. (allusion: ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, Shakespeare)
7.
'Dunsany’s Hope' I’ve been hovering near the border drawn by Memory and Sound Ever near the Dreaming, calling Elfland: Alam Al-Mithal, Alam Al-Mithal, the Wind and Tallow Like a child with a treasure but no age nor wisdom to protect it - Rare as coral it was stolen, painted like a clown, abused and broken Now I hear and I obey! (the fear is at bay, the fear is at bay) For I catch the glimpses fey! (be not afraid, they say be not afraid) I’ll prepare to make my way! (the past is away, the past is away) Oh those hills have called me long and I must answer.... Never far from the border, though the Realms are ebbing, still they hold me - Alam Al-Mithal, Alam Al-Mithal, the Dream is over
8.
Gwyllion 03:58
'Gwyllion' Stony is her stair where brambles grow; Ponies wild and fair would pass by Gwyllion Lonely is her lair where horsemen lie; Eyes behind her hair is waiting Gwyllion: Dilly-bag bounty, carry the brain Billy or Tamlin - what was your name? Tig Tag Toe, and wouldn’t you know? Nimble my ride to ramble row!
9.
'Violin Velvet' Violin made of black velvet, strings of brocade: Tunes are threads, weaving, braiding my tapestry of a parade Violin Velvet, sew your song Violin Velvet, won’t be long Till I find a fountain where you may play on! Needle for a bow, where your melody will go, I don’t know, Violin Velvet...
10.
Fountainsong 03:32
Another version of this song has the full lyrics, elsewhere on the album and this compilation, however you can hear a beautiful recital of poetry in Spanish, which Priscilla Hernandez wrote and recited for the Singing Fountains: English trans of Spanish*: You can hear the magical fountain singing it springs its voice so vivid yet so delicate and its melodies will be the seed of sweet legends that drink out of clear waters and pure glass * I will try to obtain the Spanish words from Priscilla, which I could not find in my timezone lag today! 22nd August 2020 - Louisa x

'The Fountains of Alderbee' Once upon a time in a land beneath a dream Fountains learned the Song of a Faery sea Echoing laughter glimmering in their gleam Run, run an’ row to the City of Alderbee! Would you be an imp on the barge of a water-street? Sail into a shell with the memory of a leaf? Listen down, listen long, to the Lorelei of the Deep, Shimmer oh shingle, nymph an’ nixie ‘neath... From the waterfall to the lake of Antiquity Songpool flow, awaken Lemurian trees, Come, come along with the paladin of the free Can, can you hear the fountains of Alderbee?

'The Witch in the Wood' There’s a red briar, in my garden Dressed in fruit she carries but once a year There’s a changeling, in my cradle With a phantom laughter and pointed ear There’s a black crow, at my window With the hollow eyes of a seer – oh! Tell me, do you know the Witch in the Wood? Come Robin, tell me - have you seen the Witch in the Wood? I’ve a stable, by the old tree, And her walls of spiderthorn tangle my hair There’s an ocean, in my cauldron And the earth’s belly is aching for more There’s a piper, on our hillside If you won’t follow I’m going alone – oh! Tell me, how to find the Witch in the Wood… Come plover, show me – if I am the Witch in the Wood: Oh seer, you’ll wake the witch in my blood! For I am, mother, oh I am the Witch in the Wood.

about

Hi, Faerieworlders! During our first two days of a magical three-day festival, Faerieworlds Live From Home 2020, I noticed that Bandcamp is more accessible than my website that's in renewal. Further, most of my albums have sold out. So I've plucked a digital bunch of songs especially for you, mostly from the live medley. In this short timeframe I could not find WAV files of some, e.g. 'Blackbird' or 'The Seagiant', so I'll beam them separately later - anyway, they're on You-Tube. Instead, I've chosen a couple of others, plus a bonus remix of 'The Witch in the Wood' + 2 versions of 'Antiquity', one raw like at Faerieworlds. Let me know of any errors, please. I'm in timezone lag! Fey gratitude and respect - Louisa x
